Autotest – Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4
Voor 2009 heeft Suzuki de Grand Vitara gewijzigd. Geen grote wijzigingen, maar meer het normale onderhoud aan een model. Zo is het uiterlijk iets aangepast en worden er nieuwe materialen gebruikt. Alle Grand Vitara’s hebben vanaf nu een nieuwe voorbumper en grille, andere stoelbekleding, en climate control met airconditioning. Vanaf de Comfort uitvoering vindt u ook trendy richtingaanwijzers in de buitenspiegels. Ook zijn er twee nieuwe motoren: een 3.2 V6 en een 2.4, beide benzinemotoren. SUVlifestyle reed met de nieuwe viercilinder benzinemotor.
Motor en aandrijving
Zoals gezegd is de motor van deze Grand Vitara helemaal nieuw. Het is een 2,4 liter viercilinder met 16 kleppen, 169 pk (124 kW) en een koppel van 227 Nm bij 3.800 toeren per minuut. Daarmee past deze motor prima tussen de 2.0 en de nieuwe 3.2 V6 benzinemotoren. Althans voor wat betreft de vijfdeurs Grand Vitara. De driedeurs uitvoering heeft een 1.6 basismotor en geen V6, maar krijgt eveneens deze 2.4 benzinemotor. Voor alle uitvoeringen is bovendien een uitstekende 1.9 diesel leverbaar.
De standaard overbrenging is een goed schakelende vijfversnellingsbak. Voor 2000 euro meer is een elektronisch geregelde viertraps automaat leverbaar. Voor de driedeurs uitvoering is dit trouwens de enige mogelijkheid een automaat te rijden. De 1.6 benzine en 1.9 diesel kunnen niet worden voorzien van een automaat. De 3.2 V6 (vijfdeurs) wordt juist uitsluitend met een automatische bak geleverd, maar dat is een vijftraps.
Suzuki heeft de CO2 uitstoot van de basismotoren voor het modeljaar 2009 verlaagd. De 2.0 zit daarmee zelfs onder de 200 gram, de nieuwe 2.4 brengt het op 208 gram. Schijnt tegenwoordig belangrijk te zijn, dus we melden het u maar even. Het verbruik van de 2.4 wordt opgegeven voor 11,1 liter per 100 kilometer. De benzinetank heeft een inhoud van 60 liter. Onder de motorkap is gelukkig niet alles afgedekt. Op de foto ziet u linksonder de zeer hoog gemonteerde luchtinlaat. Handig voor doorwadingen.
Het aandrijvingssysteem van Suzuki is permanent 4×4. Daarbij wordt 47% van de aandrijfkrachten naar de vooras gestuurd en 53% naar de achteras. Via een draaiknop links op de middenconsole stelt u de beschikbare standen in. Dit zijn 4H voor normaal gebruik, 4H lock voor een geblokkeerd middendifferentieel, en 4L lock voor lage gearing. De laatste is een echte ‘terreinversnelling’ waarmee de auto zeer langzaam kan rijden met een grote trekkracht. Bijna alle moderne SUV’s ontberen zo’n lage gearing.
De 3.2 V6 uitvoering kent als enige hill-hold en hill-descent control. Hill-hold control lijkt ons voor alle modellen wel handig. Het houdt de auto op een helling staande zonder dat u hoeft te knoeien met gas, koppeling en handrem. Hill-descent moet voorkomen dat de wagen op een modderige helling gaat glijden of te hard gaat. Een beetje 4×4 rijder heeft dat in combinatie met 4L lock niet nodig.
Carrosserie
De hier geteste vijfdeurs uitvoering is vrij ruim bij een lengte van slechts 4,50 meter. Dat is inclusief de reservewielcover. Ook de breedte en hoogte zijn bescheiden. De driedeurs is nog een halve meter korter. Het kentekengewicht is met 1.527 kilogram gewoon licht voor een 4×4.
De 2009 uitvoering is wat opgefrist met een andere grille en voorbumper. Hiermee ziet het in 2005 geïntroduceerde model er weer helemaal modern uit. Vooral in het trendy wit van onze testwagen. Opvallend is de montage van knipperlichten in de spiegels.
De bagageruimte is bereikbaar via een grote deur die naar de rechterzijde opent. Dat is onhandig als de auto naast het trottoir geparkeerd is. Ook is wat ruimte achter de auto nodig voor die grote deur. Hij geeft in elk geval toegang tot 1.386 liter inhoud. De achterbank kan daarbij in 60:40 verhouding worden neergeklapt.
Uitrusting
De vijfdeurs 2.4 kent alleen een Exclusive en High Executive uitvoering. Onze testauto was voorzien van het meest luxe pakket. Hiertoe behoren opvallende extra’s als leren bekleding, een leren driespaaks stuurwiel, radio/MP3/cd-speler met 6-de wisselaar, privacy glass en een elektrisch schuif/kanteldak. Minder opvallend zijn de verwarmde spiegels en stoelen, cruise control, Xenon koplampen en 18 inch lichtmetalen velgen (Exclusive: 17 inch).
Daarnaast zijn delen van de middenconsole en portieren voorzien van een luxe afwerking. Wij vonden het iets weg hebben van een mineraal, maar het heet toch echt ‘Black wood grain’.
Het interieur ziet er sowieso verzorgd uit. Het driespaaks stuurwiel met knoppen doet zeer sportief aan en lijkt wel uit een Swift afkomstig. Met een ronde draaiknop op de middenconsole is de temperatuur vlot te regelen en digitaal afleesbaar. De andere ronde knop regelt de blaaskracht en de uitstroomopeningen. Daaronder zitten knoppen voor de 4×4 instellingen en het uitschakelen van het ESP. In de portieren en de middenconsole zijn bekerhouders geplaatst. Een armleuninkje is naar voren of achteren te verstellen. Als u het deksel hiervan opent wordt een klein, maar handig vak voor spulletjes zichtbaar.
Bijzonder is het sleutelvrije startsysteem. Hiermee kunt u de ‘sleutel’ in de zak laten zitten. U loopt gewoon de auto in en start door een schakelaar om te draaien. De afstandbediening heeft uiteraard wel knoppen om de auto op verzoek te vergrendelen en ontgrendelen.
Het instrumentenpaneel is prettig verlicht. onder de snelheidsmeter is een aanduiding ‘Range’ zichtbaar die het bereik met de huidige tankinhoud toont. Als u heel goed kijkt is ook een miniem tijdklokje te zien.
Al met al is de High Executive een complete uitvoering waar uitstekend mee valt te leven. Hij kost dan ook € 33.999. Midi-SUV’s als de Mercedes-Benz GLK, Audi Q5 of Land Rover Freelander kosten in zo’n uitvoering het dubbele. Die hebben dan wel opties als een axiaal verstelbaar stuurwiel, beter verstelbare, elektrisch te bedienen stoelen, een betere audio-installatie, parkeersensoren, regen- en lichtsensor en een navigatiesysteem. Allemaal zaken die hier ontbreken.
Rijtest
Wanneer u een diesel gewend bent komt de Soes met zijn 2.4 benzinemotor niet bijzonder krachtig over. Het vermogen en helaas ook het maximum koppel zitten nogal bovenin het toerenbereik. Daardoor moet de motor toeren draaien om zijn volledige potentieel te benutten. Maar als u de 1.6 of 2.0 liter motor uit de (Grand) Vitara kent is de 2.4 een stap vooruit. De Suzuki is voor een 4×4 relatief licht van gewicht en komt met de 169 pk sterke benzinemotor uitstekend met het verkeer mee.
Wij reden auto met een vijftraps handbak. Deze voldoet uitstekend. Aangezien de motor bijzonder soepel is kunt u best schakellui rijden. De vijfde versnelling zorgt er voor dat de auto weinig toeren draait. Daardoor is hij natuurlijk zuiniger en nóg stiller. Alleen moet u in dat geval geen haast hebben. Heeft u dat wel, dan is doortrekken in de versnellingen gewenst. Bijvoorbeeld bij inhaalacties. Goed voor het milieu, maar een versnelling terug is bij inhalen echt nodig. Op provinciale wegen lieten we de auto soms in de vierde versnelling staan voor een levendiger weggedrag. Dat kan omdat de motor erg stil is.
De als optie leverbare automaat hebben wij niet getest. Wel maken we ons enige zorgen omdat deze slechts vier trappen kent. Dat lijkt niet zo’n ideale combinatie met de wat hoogtoerige 2.4 benzinemotor. Maar dat zult u zelf in een proefrit moeten ervaren.
De auto stuurt vlot in en maakt daardoor een zeer handelbare indruk. Het overhellen is beperkt. De zitpositie is voor een 4×4 niet bijzonder hoog. Remmen en vering zijn prima in orde. Door dit alles voelt de auto bijna aan als een personenwagen. Zowel op de snelweg als in de stad is de Soes een prettige kameraad. Bovendien is het een echte 4×4 met permanente vierwielaandrijving en een lage gearing. Alleen lijken ons de standaard banden van deze uitvoering weinig geschikt voor terreingebruik. Met een setje stalen velgen en grovere banden kan een Grand Vitara bijna alles aan. Dat hebben we eerder al eens getest.
Waanzinnig irritant is een piepje dat klinkt zolang u het bestuurdersportier open heeft, bijvoorbeeld om in- of uit te stappen. Op het centrale display staat dan ‘Door open’. Alsof u zelf niet in de gaten heeft dat het grote gat naast u de deur is. Zal wel een veiligheidsmaatregel voor idiote Amerikanen zijn.
Conclusie
De hier geteste Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4 High Executive kost € 33.999. Dat is veel goedkoper dan bijvoorbeeld een Nissan X-Trail met 2.5 motor of een Toyota RAV4 2.0 Executive. De wat minder luxe Grand Vitara 2.4 Exclusive kost nog eens drieduizend euro minder. Wat ons betreft is dat misschien wel de beste koop. De High Executive is wel beter uitgerust, maar het niveau van een Duitse of Engelse lifestyle SUV haalt hij toch niet. Dus steek dat prijsverschil in uw zak en doe er iets leuks van!
